Date: September 1, 2026 Location: New Winneba, Central Region

Three people have lost their lives and fifteen others sustained injuries after violent clashes broke out in New Winneba on Tuesday morning. The Ghana Police Service confirmed that one of the injured is a police officer, with all victims receiving treatment at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba.

The unrest reportedly began around 10:40 a.m., when about 300 armed individuals stormed the township wielding guns, stones, cutlasses, and sticks. The attackers, believed to have come from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze, and Gomoa Pomadze, vandalized shops and properties belonging to residents.

Police units from Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were deployed to restore calm. The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, ordered reinforcements from the National Police Headquarters, including two armoured vehicles, to prevent further escalation.

Authorities say the situation is now under control, though investigations continue into the cause of the clashes and the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
