Filip Nowacki Makes History with European Gold in Paris

Filip Nowacki, the teenage swimming sensation from Jersey, has etched his name into the record books by winning his first senior European Championship title in Paris. The 18-year-old stormed to victory in the men’s 200m breaststroke, clocking 2:07.70 to edge Dutch rival Caspar Corbeau by just 0.08 seconds. Austria’s Luka Mladenovic took bronze.

This triumph marks the first European gold ever for a Channel Island swimmer and comes less than a month after Nowacki claimed Commonwealth gold in Glasgow. Known for his powerful finishing speed, he surged from sixth place at the halfway mark to snatch victory in the final stretch.

“It’s very special. I’m over the moon,” Nowacki said after the race. “The biggest thing for me was dealing with the pressure. I had to stay patient and trust my strength in the last 50 meters.”

Already a world junior champion, Nowacki’s back-to-back senior titles signal the arrival of a new star in British swimming. His rise has been rapid, and his ability to deliver under pressure suggests this is only the beginning of a remarkable career.
